Submissions
Michael Bisping all the way. It’s not that Michael Bisping is a Jiu-Jitsu wizard. The fact remains that Bisping has a clear advantage in submissions based on one thing alone and that is his submission defence.
Michael Bisping so far has never been submitted in his MMA career (which totals 24 fights currently) and has faced fighters who have been accomplished Jiu Jitsu practitioners. Bisping’s submission offence is not as impressive as he only has 4 wins to date via submission in his career. It would be wise for Bisping to tighten up his submission offence against a man who has tapped more than a post man at a front door.
The biggest weakness in Chael Sonnen’s MMA game is his submission defence. No matter how much Mr. Sonnen tells people that he can defend submissions, the fact remains that he has lost more than 80% of his fights via submission. We are MMA actually believe Sonnen when he says he can defend submissions. The problem is Chael Sonnen’s style of fighting. He is so aggressive and so brutal with his ground and pound that he often leaves openings for a well-versed submission fighter to catch him in a submission hold. Anderson Silva and Damien Maia did that in their fights against Sonnen and even Nate Marquardt came extremely close to submitting Sonnen twice when they fought.
Michael Bisping says he is not worried about being taken down by Sonnen because he claims he will submit Sonnen. If Bisping works on his submission attack and is patient when he is in a bad position during their fight he may well have a chance to submit Sonnen. The question is when Sonnen leaves an open will Bisping be able to exploit it?
