UFC 142 was a decent card. It was not a bad card, but compared to some of the crazy PPV’s that the company has produced over the last 12 months it perhaps was disappointing.
The PPV did produce many shocks but perhaps the most shocking thing was an event that took place outside the UFC’s famous octagon.
Anthony Johnson has been in the UFC for a long time. He has always had a major problem cutting weight and many fans and analysts could not understand Johnson’s continued efforts to fight at 170 pounds. Finally after years of struggling to make 170, Johnson decided to do one of the smartest things in his career which was go up a weight class. Well that was what we thought. 185 pounds would be perfect for Johnson. He is a very big guy and not having to cut as much weight would surely give Johnson better cardio and added strength. Again so we thought.
Anthony Johnson did something which will probably never happen before in an combat sport and will probably never happen again. He was 12 pounds over the weight limit at the weigh-in.
To be over the weight limit of a fight is probably one the worst thing any fighter could do. To be 12 pounds over the weight limit is just unprofessional. Anthony Johnson seems like a nice guy but ultimately he deserved to be cut by the UFC.
