Rashad Evans vs Phil Davis: Is Davis taking on more than he can chew?

In a few hours Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will face each other in a very important fight which will have a huge impact in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division.

If Evans wins he will once again cement his status as the number one contender in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division. Evans has had an unbelievable amount of bad luck in regards to obtaining a title shot for the 205 title. There have either been injuries to him or the champion he was supposed to face.

Phil Davis is in a win-win situation. If he loses everyone will say that Davis is a bright young prospect but the step up in competition was too early. If Phil Davis wins he would not only have caused one of the biggest upsets of the year but he will strengthen his claims to receive a title shot (assuming the UFC gives the next title shot to Dan Henderson).

There are many different areas and factors which will be key in deciding who wins the fight between Evans and Davis. We will look at each area in order to determine who will win this Saturday. First up is striking.

Striking
We are MMA has to give the advantage here to Evans. Rashad has proven over the years to be a well rounded fighter. When he first entered the UFC, Rashad was just a wrestler. He would take guys down and then try to beat them up with ground and pound. Phil Davis is very much a carbon copy of Rashad Evans 6 years ago. Davis looks very average at striking and uses his wrestling to control where the fight takes place. Ulitmately if Davis can’t take Evans down it will be a very difficult night for him.
